A matrimonial regime is the set of rules that decides how the property of spouses is treated during the marriage and when it ends.
If spouses do not sign a contract, the default regime applies. A marriage contract lets them choose a different one, such as separation as to property.
Some rules, such as those on the family patrimony, apply whichever regime is chosen. A notary can explain how they work together.
